3. Anne Frank exhibition at Rockwood

Pupils and staff at Rockwood met some inspirational individuals and had the chance to delve into key moments in history during a special event held at the school in February.

A number of people who had survived atrocities gave talks at the event, organised by the Anne Frank Trust.

Amongst them was grandmother Mindu Hornick, who survived the horrors of the Auschwitz concentration camp. Mindu, who is now 86, told of her time in the camp and how she became separated from her family, some of whom did not survive. She said: “ We, the survivors, did not speak of our experiences for many years after the war, but over the last few years I have been sharing my experiences with schools and other groups. ”

Also speaking at the event was Suzy Evans, whose son was killed in the 2015 Tunisian beach attack, and Ahmad Nawaz, a teenager who witnessed a massacre at a school in Pakistan last year. He told the event: “ Students are the future of our country and I’d urge everyone to take their education seriously and to focus hard so they can shine in the future. ”

Rockwood and Nansen have worked hard with the Anne Frank Trust UK, a charity which works tirelessly to combat prejudice using the story of Anne Frank a Jewish girl who perished under the Nazis in the Second World War.

Our principal Fuzel Choudhury says the relationship with the charity is very valuable, “ It is very useful from a learning perspective as it’s interactive and an engaging way to teach history, whilst it also fits with our programme to promote the British values of diversity and community cohesion. ”

Twenty pupils from Rockwood have also become ambassadors for the project.
